Summary: What are Your Final Thoughts?
Students are faced with conflict throughout school, outside of school, and throughout their lives after school ends. Many students come to school with little to no conflict resolution skills. Peer mediation is one of the researched methods in order to reduce conflicts and increase conflict resolution skills over time. Facts and statistics show that if a peer mediation program is implemented with persistence and fidelity, physical and verbal fights decrease, while positive school climate and student self-esteem increase. Many students are raised in abusive homes and have observed or been taught to deal with conflict through violence. By age 17, 15 to 30 percent of females and 30 to 40 percent of males have reported committing a serious violent offense (Larrivee, 2009). With the possibility of violence, gang affiliation, drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness including the risk of suicide, and/or jail time during or after school ends, it is obvious that something needs to change. What will you do to make a difference in those statistics?
